Now more than ever individuals and families are relying on help from local food banks.

With more than 20.5 million[1] Americans out of work, as of April 17th, 2020, the demand has taken a toll on local food banks. They are seeing a 92% increase in demand[2], but there has been a 62% decrease in donations[2]. Those who once were able to give to their local food banks are sitting in the pickup lines at their local food banks.

To combat the decrease in donations, many local food banks have started working with organizations to host virtual events, while also bringing in a celebrity or two to help raise awareness. For example, Parks & Rec, aired a fun reunion episode to benefit Feeding America, the episode raised over $3 million[3]!

Enough statics for one post. I’ve put together a list of items that local food banks need, and yes some items are not food. Food banks also collect toiletries and household products for everyday use.

And the item I like to donate… Sanitary Napkins.

Please, if you can, consider giving a monetary donation to your local food bank or donate items they may require. If you do not know how to donate to your local food bank please use Feeding Americas Food Bank Finder.

If you are currently living in the Allegheny area, please consider donating to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. To give a monetary donation please click here, and to donate items in need, please click here.

Lastly, please remember donations DO NOT have to be expensive. A $3 jar of peanut butter, $5 pack of sanitary napkins, or $6 pack of toothbrushes can mean the world to someone.
